The
Fire Safety Development Group came together in 1992 as a consortium
of companies dedicated to advancing the case for effective regulation
governing fire protection.
Members
campaign for clear-cut and shared goals:
- To
influence governmental institutions in the United Kingdom
and the European Union for the introduction of policy and legislation
resulting in high and properly enforced fire safety standards
- To
generate a balanced and inclusive approach to regulations
governing fire safety in the built environment which encourages
fire safety systems working in concert rather than competition
- To
caution against extreme and dangerous use of fire safety engineering
principles
- To
ensure fire safety regulation relates to property, environmental and fire-fighter protection, as well as occupant life safety
- To
develop and drive forward specific campaigns with key fire
safety partners at home and abroad
Our
work programme currently concentrates on the following:
In
the UK:
-
Ensuring government proposals to modernise the fire service and reform fire safety law in England and Wales fully reinforce fire safety standards, effectively utilise the expertise of fire safety stakeholders, and are properly publicised and benchmarked.
-
Promoting
recommendations from a series of government and professional
reviews of fire safety in tall buildings and improving
fire protection in concrete and steel structures
-
Enhancing
continued fire safety risk assessment, enforcement
and management in non-domestic buildings
In the EU: ·
- Elevating
fire safety to a properly prominent position on the EU political
agenda
- Monitoring
schemes proposing to complete the Single Market
in construction products by harmonising member states' building codes, in particular those relating to
fire safety
- Facilitating
projects that bring together European fire safety agencies
and stakeholders to share best practice, data and
statistics, and fire prevention methods in order
to enhance the European Commission civil protection programme
- Modernising
- with a view to strengthening - guidelines and regulations
governing fire protection in hotels
